Is It Permissible to Create AI-Generated Cartoon Images in Islam?
Question
As-salamu alaykum, Is it permissible to create AI-generated cartoon-style images of humans and animals (somewhat realistic but clearly cartoon, not photorealistic) for the purpose of making entertaining YouTube content? JazakAllahu khayran.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
It should be noted that generating images, videos, or cartoons through AI is permissible, provided they do not contain music, obscenity, or any other elements prohibited by Islamic law. However, if they include music, indecency, nudity, images of non-mahram individuals, or other impermissible content, then creating them is not permissible.
With this clarification, if you use AI to create cartoons or videos that are free from music, indecency, non-mahram images, and any other prohibited elements, while also avoiding distortion of human features and using artificial/generated voices, then producing such digital creations is permissible in Islamic law, provided that they serve a legitimate religious need or a valid worldly benefit. It should also be kept in mind that this permission is limited to digital use only; printing such creations is not permissible.
