Is Zakat Due on Money Saved for Hajj?

Question

Asalaam. Please advice amount for zakat. Someone has saved up $11,000 for hajj and put aside, has 1 car of his own. Has about $500 for month of March expenses and $450 savings. How much zakat is supposed to be paid?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If this amount is above the nisab and a full lunar year has passed over it, then zakat is also obligatory on the money set aside for Hajj, because merely reserving money for Hajj does not exempt it from zakat.

In your case:

$11,000 (Hajj savings) + $500 (money kept for expenses) + $450 (other savings) = $11,950.

The zakat on this amount at 2.5% is approximately $298.75, which is about $299, provided that a full lunar year has passed over the money and there is no debt that needs to be deducted.

Zakat will not be due on the car, because it is a personal necessity item used for oneโ€™s own needs.
