Is Fasting Obligatory for a 12-Year-Old Girl After Her First Period?

Question

Salaam Alaikum my daughter who is 12yrs old got her period (menstruation) on February 28. My question is after her period is done is it farz mandatory for her to fast? What happens if she doesn't? Thank you Marya

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

When a girl gets her first period, she is considered an adult in Islamic law. So once her period ends and she becomes pure, fasting in Ramadan becomes obligatory (fard) for her.

If she leaves the fast without a valid reason, it will be sinful, and she will have to make up (qada) that fast later. However, if her period is still continuing, or she is sick or very weak in a way that may harm her, then she is allowed not to fast, and she can make up the fast later.

Since she has only recently reached puberty, she should be guided gently and encouraged with kindness to get used to fasting. May Allah keep her steadfast on the religion. Ameen.
